Join award-winning marine artist and history enthusiast, John Horton on board the Pacific Bear next June on two cruises through Desolation Sound. John, accompanied by his wife Mary, will share his passion and fascination with the coast. As he guides us through channels and inlets, he will give us a glimpse of the first explorations of the Pacific Northwest. He is not an unfamiliar face to these waters as he has spent many years onboard his 35’ converted fishing boat commissioning paintings of tug boats, freighters, and fishboats.

John will join our cruise on day one as we board the Pacific Bear and will tell stories of the voyage of George Vancouver as we cruise up to Homfray Lodge. On day two, John will talk more of the voyage as we cruise up Toba Inlet and have lunch on board the Pacific Bear beside beautiful waterfalls. Day three he will put on a water colour painting demonstration at Homfray Lodge, and on day 4 he will cruise with us to Tsa-Kwa-Luten Lodge on Quadra Island. Cruise departs from Lund or Powell River on June 10 and 24. Day 1: Monday

Itinerary

  • Arrive on your own into Lund, BC, gateway to Desolation Sound Marine Artist John Horton with paintings
  • Note: Scheduled airport transfers are offered complimentary from Powell River Airport 
  • Welcome reception and meet the crew of the Pacific Bear as we set off from Lund.
  • Guest guide John Horton will join us today for a one-of-a-kind tour of Desolation Sound. John will guide us into Desolation Sound through the eyes of Captain George Vancouver. We will pass Desolation Sound Provincial Marine Park a haven for boaters and kayakers with its calm waters and sheltered anchorages. As we leave the boaters behind, we cruise into Homfray Channel, one of the deepest in North America and flanked by towering peaks including the majestic Mount Denman (1920 m, 6299 ft straight up from the sea). In the late afternoon, we reach Homfray Lodge nestled in the remote wilderness of Desolation Sound, where we meet the staff and enjoy our meals prepared by the lodge's chef.

Day 2: Tuesday

Itinerary

  • Boat with waterfallAfter breakfast at Homfray Lodge, we will cruise north into remote Toba Inlet, a deep sound with steep peaks and glacial green ​water. Enjoy lunch on board The Pacific Bear, right beside one of the many spectacular waterfalls.
  • Return to Homfray Lodge in time to enjoy an afternoon at leisure with time to relax on the lodge's expansive dock or kayak to Foster Point.

Day 3: Wednesday

Itinerary

  • Marine artist John Horton painting Today you may enjoy the rustic charm and authentic warmth of Homfray Lodge. Warm summer temperatures and the meeting of the tides cause the Desolation Sound to have the mildest climate, abundant sea life and warmest water on the BC coast, with ocean temperatures reaching up to 24°C (75°F). This peaceful setting allows you to enjoy the breathtaking scenery, vibrant marine life, and the lodge's activities such as kayaks, stand up paddle boards or join and eco boat tour to explore the nearby waters. With the warm waters you can even enjoy a swim off the lodge's dock!
  • After lunch, John will carry out a water colour painting demonstration.
  • Breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight at Homfray Lodge

Day 4: Thursday

Itinerary

  • Humpback Whale breaching Depart Homfray Channel and cruise Desolation Sound to Quadra Island and Heriot Bay, watching for Humpback Whales.
  • Breakfast at the Lodge, Lunch on board the Pacific Bear
  • Farewell dinner and overnight at Tsa-Kwa-Luten Lodge

Day 5: Friday

Itinerary

  • Depart after breakfast from Quadra Island and cruise to Lund Harbour  (Estimated arrival at 12:30)
