Voyage of Discovery Cruise
Special Guest Cruise with Marine Painter John Horton

Join award-winning marine artist and history enthusiast, John Horton, on board the Pacific Bear next June on two cruises through Desolation Sound. John, accompanied by his wife Mary, will share his passion and fascination with the coast. As he guides us through channels and inlets, he will give us a glimpse of the first explorations of the Pacific Northwest. He is not an unfamiliar face to these waters as he has spent many years onboard his 52’ converted US navy "launch" (built in Pearl Harbour in 1944 and reportedly used by Admiral Nimitz as his launch or navy terms "barge"), producing paintings of tug boats, freighters, fish boats, pleasure crafts and of course, the historic vessels of the Captain Vancouver story.

John will join our cruise on Day 1 as we board the Pacific Bear and will tell stories of the voyage of George Vancouver as we cruise up to Homfray Lodge. On Day 2, John will talk more of the voyage as we cruise up Toba Inlet and have lunch on board The Pacific Bear beside beautiful waterfalls. And on Day 3, he will put on a watercolour painting demonstration at Homfray Lodge. Cruise departs from Lund or Powell River on June 10th and 24th. Ask about flights from Vancouver....they are only 35 minutes!

Day 1: Monday

Arrive on your own into Lund, BC, gateway to Desolation Sound.
Note: Scheduled airport transfers are offered complimentary from Powell River Airport

Welcome reception and meet the crew of the Pacific Bear as we set off from Lund.

Guest guide, John Horton, will join us today for a one-of-a-kind tour of Desolation Sound. John will guide us into Desolation Sound through the eyes of Captain George Vancouver. We will pass Desolation Sound Provincial Marine Park, a haven for boaters and kayakers with its calm waters and sheltered anchorages. As we leave the boaters behind, we cruise into Homfray Channel, one of the deepest in North America and flanked by towering peaks including the majestic Mount Denman (1920 m, 6299 ft straight up from the sea). In the late afternoon, we reach Homfray Lodge, nestled in the remote wilderness of Desolation Sound, where we meet the staff and enjoy our meals prepared by the lodge's chef.

Day 3: Wednesday

Today you may enjoy the rustic charm and authentic warmth of Homfray Lodge. Warm summer temperatures and the meeting of the tides cause the Desolation Sound to have the mildest climate, most abundant sea life and warmest water on the BC Coast, with ocean temperatures reaching up to 24°C (75°F). This peaceful setting allows you to enjoy the breathtaking scenery, vibrant marine life, and the lodge's activities such as kayaks, stand up paddle boards or an eco boat tour to explore the nearby waters. With the warm waters, you can even enjoy a swim off the lodge's dock!

After lunch, John will carry out a water colour painting demonstration.
