We’re looking for dynamic team members to join us onboard the Toba Cat and at Homfray Lodge for our upcoming season.

If you are someone with previous work experience in hospitality, tourism, outdoor recreation, maintenance or on boats – you might be a great fit for our team. Being situated in a forested, mountainous location on the ocean, Desolation Sound is an exciting place for outdoor enthusiasts.

Our season runs from May through October with the opportunity to start earlier and end later for operational setup and close down.

Our positions are safety-sensitive which require no drugs or alcohol.

Note: Candidates with some of the noted or other relevant certificates as well as the appropriate wilderness leadership and risk management training who are willing to get the required certifications will be considered.

Naturalist / Cruise Director

The Naturalist / Cruise Director has triple responsibilities. Part Naturalist, part Server, and part Deckhand. This person is a natural-born leader with experience guiding groups. They work closely with the captain to ensure passenger and vessel safety. They are passionate about Coastal British Columbia and are trained in all things wildlife, flora, fauna, history, and First Nations culture. They have top-notch service skills from greeting and welcoming guests to food and beverage service. Our Naturalist / Cruise Director is the guest’s liaison between the vessels, Homfray Lodge and Tsa-Qwa-Luten Lodge.

Duties Include:

  • Meeting & greeting guests in Lund prior to cruise departure.
  • Assisting with luggage handling throughout the cruise.
  • Leading guests through safety demonstration onboard the Toba Cat.
  • Serving beverages, snacks and occasionally lunch on board the Toba Cat.
  • Informing from 4 - 20 guests on all things British Columbia Coast - wildlife, flora, fauna, history and First Nations culture.
  • Maintaining interior and exterior cleanliness and organization throughout cruising and after docking.
  • Leading marine activities with Homfray Lodge Staff such as kayak tours, paddle boarding, and eco-tours on RHIB.
  • Helping out at Homfray Lodge on “day at the lodge” and after cruises. Duties will vary but could include helping the maintenance team with various duties, cleaning vessels, or leading activities.

Role Requirements:

  • Excellent customer services skills.
  • Must be in good physical shape.
  • Have sound judgment when it comes to leading groups through wilderness activities.
  • Must be a naturally charismatic and energetic individual.

Role Qualifications:

  • Experience or formal education in Naturalist training.

Captain

The Captain is the leader of our 45ft Power Catamaran, the Toba Cat. Their number one priority is operating a safe vessel for our passengers. They operate lawfully and maintain ship’s certifications and documents. The Captain has a great relationship with the Naturalist, and they work together to create a safe and comfortable cruising experience for our guests. The Captain must be able to adapt to changing situations on the ocean and with operations. They must have excellent customer service skills and be able to interact with guests on our intimate vessels. The Captain must be willing to help at Homfray Lodge with other duties including activities, general maintenance, cleaning and so on.

Duties Include:

  • Ensuring the vessel is safe to operate each and every departure.
  • Performing regular maintenance on board the vessel and the engines.
  • Assisting in luggage handling throughout the cruise.
  • Leading guests through safety demonstration onboard the Toba Cat.
  • Keeping contact with Lund, Homfray Lodge, and Tsa’Qwa’Luten Lodge and other ports throughout the cruise.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organization of vessel.
  • Leading marine activities with Homfray Lodge Staff such as kayak tours, paddle boarding, and eco-tours on RHIB.
  • Helping out at Homfray Lodge on “day at the lodge” and after cruises. Duties will vary but could include helping the maintenance team with various duties, cleaning vessels, or leading activities.

Role Requirements:

  • Excellent Customer Service Skills.
  • Must be in good physical shape.
  • Have sound judgment when operating the vessels through Coastal waters.
  • Be familiar with Transport Canada’s practices and regulations.
  • Well-groomed, neat, tidy, honest, reliable.

Role Qualifications:

  • Possess the necessary qualifications to captain a 60 gross ton or more
  • SVMO
  • Previous experience Captaining a similar vessel is an asset.
  • Be familiar with Transport Canada’s practices and regulations.
  • Remote Wilderness First Aid + CPR/AED Level 3

Server / Housekeeper / Yoga Instructor

This team member will help in the day to day operations from breakfast, lunch and dinner service to housekeeping and leading our guests through the occasional morning yoga practice. This role requires someone who is service-oriented and has a sense of urgency yet amazing attention to detail. This person must be comfortable with lots of guest interaction and presents themselves in a welcoming manner.

Duties Include:

  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner service.
  • Daily housekeeping.
  • Leading our guests through the occasional morning yoga practice or morning stretch.
  • Welcoming, greeting and providing excellent customer service to our guests throughout their stay.
  • Assisting guests with paddleboards, kayaks, fishing gear, and other activities.
  • Maintaining daily meal schedule and welcome boards.
  • Leading guests in activities like trail walks, storytelling, games, or campfire music to enrich the guest’s experience.
  • Engaging our guests in friendly conversation throughout their stay.
  • Plus any extra duties that are asked of you by a manager.

Role Requirements:

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Be in good physical shape. (Constant walking and lifting)
  • Positive attitude and can adapt to change.
  • Well-groomed, neat, tidy, honest, reliable.

Role Qualifications:

  • Serving experience and Serving it Right Certification
  • Previous hospitality/tourism experience
  • Housekeeping experience (not required but an asset)
  • Food Safe Certification
  • Small Vessel Operators Proficiency (not required but an asset)
  • Remote Wilderness First Aid + CPR/AED Level 3

Breakfast and Lunch Cook

Homfray Lodge is in search of a self-motivated, energetic breakfast and lunch cook who takes pride in offering exceptional customer service. This person will be responsible for preparing a high-quality breakfast buffet and either packed lunches or lunch at the lodge for our 16 guests and 8 staff. The breakfast and lunch cook will work closely with the Chef to make sure there is consistency in the quality and presentation in the food. Will occasionally be required to fill in for head chef and take over dinner service. The cook will have other duties at the lodge including maintenance, cleaning, leading activities, etc.

Duties Include:

  • Happy to rise early to prepare breakfast buffet for guests
  • Make packed lunches or at lodge lunches depending on the daily schedule
  • Work with the head chef to learn menu and syllabus, monitor inventory and keep the kitchen clean.
  • Responsible for cleaning kitchen during and after shift - dishes, floors, surfaces, and fridges.
  • Train with the head chef to learn the dinner menu and will occasionally be asked to fill in for dinner service.
  • Will help with other duties at the lodge ranging from maintenance, activities, room attending and so on.
  • Plus any extra duties that are asked of you by a manager

Role Requirements:

  • Must create and maintain a positive BOH environment
  • Must take comments or feedback professionally
  • Must be self-motivated to work early hours alone
  • Must have a keen eye for detail and never settle for mediocracy
  • Must be physically capable of standing for long periods of time and heavy lifting
  • Be willing to lead guests in activities like trail walks, storytelling, games, or campfire music to enrich the guests’ experience and engage them in friendly conversation throughout the trip.
  • Well-groomed, neat, tidy, honest, reliable

Role Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years working in a kitchen
